The Alex Golesh era on the Plains began not with the offensive fireworks many anticipated, but with an old-school, goal-line stand for the ages. The Auburn Tigers football team kicked off their 2026 season with a heart-stopping 17-16 victory over the Baylor Bears football team in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday. This intense matchup tested both teams to their limits, but it all came down to one crucial defensive play that marked a strong start for Auburn’s new head coach. With just nine seconds left, Baylor scored a touchdown to close the gap, but instead of settling for overtime, they opted for a two-point conversion to win. Auburn safety Eric Winters stepped up, stopping Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway right at the goal line, clinching a hard-fought and emotional victory for the Tigers.

This lack of solid protection hindered Auburn’s ability to create explosive plays downfield. The running game didn’t provide much help either, with the Tigers managing just 3.2 yards per carry. Star running back Jeremiah Cobb encountered tough resistance at the line, making it difficult for Auburn to implement the fast-paced, balanced strategy that Golesh aims for.
