The Matchups That Could Define CUSA’s National Reputation: Conference USA enters the 2026 season looking to build on the momentum it has created over the past few years. With the league trimmed to 10 football members and coming off another competitive season, every opportunity against outside competition matters.

While every non-conference victory helps bowl positioning, a handful of games carry much greater significance. These aren’t just rivalry games, they’re opportunities for Conference USA programs to prove they belong on the national stage against regional rivals and fellow Group of Five contenders.

Here are the five biggest out-of-conference games for Conference USA this fall.

1. FIU vs. FAU — The Shula Bowl

All-Time Series: FAU leads 17-6 (.227)

The most recognizable non-conference rivalry involving a Conference USA school is back. The Shula Bowl remains one of college football’s most unique in-state rivalries, featuring the only two public universities located in South Florida’s Miami metropolitan area. Named after legendary Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula, the rivalry has survived conference realignment and continues to generate plenty of emotion every September.

FIU finally snapped FAU’s seven-game winning streak last season, giving the Panthers renewed confidence entering 2026. Another victory would prove that FIU’s program is beginning to close the gap with its American Athletic Conference rival.

For Conference USA, a win over an AAC opponent would be another statement that the league continues to rise.

Why it matters: Bragging rights, recruiting in South Florida, and conference pride.

2. New Mexico State vs. New Mexico — Battle of I-25

All-Time Series: New Mexico leads 35-75-5 (.326)

No game means more to Aggie fans than the annual Battle of I-25. Separated by just over 200 miles, New Mexico State and New Mexico have battled for state supremacy for more than a century. While conference affiliations have changed over the years, the rivalry remains one of the Southwest’s oldest traditions.

For New Mexico State, defeating the Lobos would instantly energize the fan base and provide one of the conference’s signature victories early in the season.

Winning rivalry games often changes the trajectory of an entire season.

Why it matters: State bragging rights and an opportunity to knock off an in-state Mountain West rival.

3. Jacksonville State at Georgia Southern

All-Time Series: Georgia Southern leads 6-1 (.143)

This game has all the ingredients to become one of the South’s most entertaining regional matchups. Jacksonville State has quickly become one of Conference USA’s flagship programs since moving to the FBS, while Georgia Southern remains one of the Sun Belt’s most respected brands.

Although the Eagles have dominated the all-time series, the Gamecocks have elevated their program dramatically in recent seasons and now have an opportunity to prove they can compete with one of the Sun Belt’s established powers.

A road victory in Statesboro would resonate throughout the Group of Five landscape.

Why it matters: A measuring stick against one of the Sun Belt’s traditional contenders.

4. Liberty vs. James Madison

All-Time Series: James Madison leads 13-6 (.316)

There may not be a better Group of Five showdown this season. Liberty and James Madison have become two of the premier programs outside the Power Four, and every meeting between the Virginia schools carries regional importance.

James Madison has enjoyed more historical success in the rivalry, but Liberty has developed into a perennial Conference USA championship contender and regularly competes for national recognition.

A Flames victory would strengthen the argument that Conference USA’s best can compete with anyone outside the Power Four.

Why it matters: Regional supremacy and national Group of Five respect.

5. Kennesaw State vs. Georgia State

All-Time Series: Georgia State leads 1-0 (.000)

This rivalry is just getting started. Located only miles apart in metro Atlanta, Kennesaw State and Georgia State represent two rapidly growing football programs with plenty to prove. The schools recently agreed to a multi-game series, giving fans another exciting in-state matchup.

After winning its first Conference USA championship in 2025, Kennesaw State enters 2026 with growing expectations. Beating an established Sun Belt opponent would further validate the Owls’ remarkable rise through the FBS ranks.

Don’t be surprised if this develops into one of the Southeast’s newest rivalry games over the next decade.

Why it matters: Atlanta-area recruiting, in-state bragging rights, and continued national recognition.

Conference USA doesn’t need perfection in non-conference play—it needs signature victories.

Whether it’s FIU reclaiming South Florida, New Mexico State winning the Battle of I-25, Jacksonville State making a statement in the Sun Belt, Liberty proving it’s among the nation’s elite Group of Five programs, or Kennesaw State continuing its rapid ascent, these five games will help shape how college football views Conference USA in 2026.

If the league can win the majority of these matchups, it won’t just improve its bowl resume, it will strengthen Conference USA’s reputation as one of the nation’s most competitive Group of Five conferences.
