The new-look Mountain West enters the 2026 season with perhaps the most intriguing postseason outlook of any Group of Six conference.
Unlike previous years, the conference champion is no longer tied to one specific bowl destination. Instead, the Mountain West champion’s first objective is the College Football Playoff. If the champion is not selected, ESPN will place the conference’s No. 1 team into one of six bowl games. The conference also maintains tie-ins with the Sheraton Hawaiʻi Bowl and Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl, while the Cactus Bowl remains a valuable backup opportunity when a spot becomes available.
With media days complete and preseason expectations beginning to take shape, here’s how I project the Mountain West bowl picture to unfold.
1. UNLV Rebels
College Football Playoff
Projected Record: 10-2 (7-1 Mountain West)
Barry Odom has transformed UNLV into one of the premier Group of Six programs, and the Rebels appear poised for another championship run.
UNLV enters 2026 with arguably the conference’s most complete roster and enough talent on both sides of the ball to earn the Mountain West’s automatic berth into the College Football Playoff. The Rebels have recruited exceptionally well by conference standards and continue to benefit from playing in one of college football’s fastest-growing markets.
A 10-2 regular season with a Mountain West Championship would almost certainly secure the conference’s CFP berth.

2. New Mexico Lobos
Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl
Projected Record: 9-3 (6-2 Mountain West)
The Lobos have become one of the Mountain West’s biggest success stories.
After their breakthrough season, New Mexico returns enough talent to challenge for the conference championship once again. Their offense should remain among the league’s most explosive, and a nine-win season would likely earn the Lobos the distinction of being ESPN’s highest-rated Mountain West team outside the CFP.
That makes the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl the perfect landing spot.
With a historical payout benchmark of $1.35 million, it represents the most financially valuable guaranteed ESPN destination for the conference’s top non-CFP team. The Fort Worth location also offers excellent television exposure and the opportunity to face a quality Power Four or American Athletic Conference opponent.

3. Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
Sheraton Hawaii Bowl
Projected Record: 8-4 (6-2 Mountain West)
Hawaii may be one of the most entertaining teams in the conference.
Behind preseason Offensive Player of the Year Micah Alejado, the Rainbow Warriors should once again contend for a spot in the Mountain West Championship Game before finishing with eight wins.
When Hawaiʻi reaches bowl eligibility, the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl remains the most logical destination.
The game has become synonymous with Mountain West football and carries one of the conference’s strongest bowl relationships. Historically, it features a $1.2 million payout, making it one of the most valuable postseason opportunities outside the CFP.
Playing on Oʻahu also creates a true home-field advantage while reducing travel expenses and providing one of the most unique bowl experiences in college football.

4. Wyoming Cowboys
Isleta New Mexico Bowl
Projected Record: 7-5 (5-3 Mountain West)
Every season there seems to be one Mountain West team that outperforms expectations.
In 2026, that team could very well be Wyoming.
The Cowboys have enough experience returning to rebound into bowl contention, and a 7-5 finish would represent another successful season in Laramie.
The Isleta New Mexico Bowl feels like an ideal fit.
With a historical payout benchmark of $1.05 million, it is one of the conference’s highest-paying bowl opportunities. Albuquerque also provides a regional destination that Wyoming fans have traditionally traveled well to, making for an excellent atmosphere.
Season Outlook: Biggest Sleeper

5. North Dakota State Bison
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Projected Record: 7-5 (5-3 Mountain West)
North Dakota State’s first season in the Mountain West should be a successful one.
The Bison will experience the inevitable ups and downs of transitioning to FBS competition, but seven wins would be an outstanding debut while immediately establishing themselves as a future conference contender.
The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is a natural destination.
Boise offers easy travel for Bison fans, cold-weather football suits North Dakota State’s identity, and the bowl has one of the richest histories among Mountain West postseason games.
Its historical payout benchmark of $800,000 makes it a solid middle-tier bowl while providing a memorable first FBS postseason experience.
Season Outlook: Successful FBS Debut
Postseason Projection: 🥔 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
6. Air Force Falcons
Frisco Bowl
Projected Record: 7-5 (4-4 Mountain West)
Air Force rebounds nicely in 2026.
The Falcons return one of the conference’s better defenses and should return to bowl eligibility despite another demanding schedule.
The Frisco Bowl would provide an outstanding destination.
Located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, the game offers excellent recruiting exposure in Texas while giving ESPN another nationally recognizable military academy to showcase during bowl season.
Although the historical payout benchmark sits at $650,000, the value of the Dallas television market and recruiting footprint makes the Frisco Bowl an attractive postseason destination.

7. San Jose State Spartans
Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl
Projected Record: 6-6 (4-4 Mountain West)
The Spartans sneak into bowl eligibility.
After navigating a rebuilding season, San José State reaches the six-win mark and earns another postseason invitation.
The Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl makes perfect sense.
The Mountain West has a long-standing relationship with the Tucson-based bowl, and San José State’s exciting offensive style would fit well with one of college football’s most unique postseason events.
While its historical payout benchmark is $350,000, the Arizona Bowl has developed a fun identity and remains an important postseason partner for the conference.

Final Thoughts
The Mountain West’s revamped postseason structure provides more flexibility than ever before.
If UNLV delivers on expectations, the Rebels should become the conference’s representative in the expanded College Football Playoff, continuing the league’s presence on college football’s biggest stage.
Behind them, New Mexico appears well positioned to claim ESPN’s top non-CFP placement in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, while Hawaii once again benefits from one of the conference’s signature postseason partnerships. Wyoming, North Dakota State, Air Force and San Jose State round out a bowl lineup that would give the Mountain West seven postseason teams, a strong statement for a conference entering a new era.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway is this: the Mountain West no longer relies on one marquee bowl to define its postseason success. With CFP access, multiple ESPN-controlled placements, longstanding relationships in Hawaiʻi and Tucson, and the potential for a Cactus Bowl invitation, the conference has assembled one of the deepest and most flexible bowl portfolios among the Group of Six. A successful 2026 season could position the Mountain West to strengthen its national reputation heading into the next phase of college football realignment.
