From Death Valley to Dublin—and a rivalry weekend loaded with ACC-versus-SEC showdowns—the conference will have plenty of opportunities to make a national statement
The 2026 college football season will arrive with major questions surrounding the ACC. Can Clemson return to the center of the national championship conversation? Is Florida State prepared to compete with the nation’s elite? Can Georgia Tech continue building momentum while navigating one of the conference’s most ambitious non-conference schedules? Can Louisville strengthen its position as a consistent contender near the top of the ACC?
The conference will not have to wait long to begin answering those questions. The ACC’s 2026 non-conference schedule features road trips to LSU, Alabama and Georgia; major home games against Tennessee and Colorado; neutral-site showcases in Nashville and Dublin; and four emotional rivalry games against SEC opponents during the final weekend of the regular season.
These games matter because college football perception is often established before conference play reaches its midpoint. Early victories create national momentum, strengthen College Football Playoff résumés and improve the reputation of an entire league. Losses—especially in highly visible games—can force teams and conferences to spend the remainder of the season trying to change the narrative.
History also adds another layer to these matchups. Several ACC programs will attempt to close the gap in long-running series, while others will look to protect decades of rivalry success. Clemson owns a commanding advantage over South Carolina, but the Tigers have historically struggled against LSU. Florida State will attempt to earn only its second victory against Alabama. Louisville can move within one game of tying Kentucky in the Governor’s Cup series, while Georgia Tech will try to reverse recent history against its two longtime rivals, Tennessee and Georgia.
The ACC does not need to win every marquee matchup. Few conferences ever do. But it must win enough of the right games to demonstrate strength at the top, improve its position in the College Football Playoff conversation and prove that its best programs can compete with the best from the SEC and Big 12.
Based on national appeal, rivalry value, historical significance, postseason implications and importance to the conference, here are the ACC’s 10 biggest non-conference games of the 2026 season.
1. Clemson at LSU — Sept. 5
All-Time Series: LSU leads, 4–1
College football will not need a long warmup before delivering one of the biggest games of the 2026 season. Clemson travels to Baton Rouge for a matchup between two programs with national championship histories, passionate fan bases and two of college football’s most intimidating versions of “Death Valley.”
The history favors LSU. The Tigers from Baton Rouge own a 4–1 advantage in the all-time series, giving Clemson an opportunity to earn only its second victory against LSU. Although these programs have not met often, their limited history includes games played on some of college football’s biggest stages.
This matchup will provide an immediate evaluation of Clemson’s national ceiling. Winning ACC games may position the Tigers for a conference championship, but winning at LSU would demonstrate that Clemson is capable of defeating an elite opponent in one of the most difficult road environments in the sport.
Clemson’s ability to remain composed early may determine the direction of the game. The Tigers must avoid turnovers, limit penalties and prevent LSU from creating explosive plays that energize the crowd. Falling behind by multiple scores in Baton Rouge can force visiting teams away from their game plans and allow the atmosphere to become a significant advantage for LSU.
Controlling the line of scrimmage will also be critical. If Clemson can establish a consistent running game, protect its quarterback and create manageable third downs, it can sustain drives and keep LSU’s offense on the sideline. Defensively, Clemson will need to create pressure without giving up explosive plays downfield.
The national implications could be significant. A victory would immediately strengthen Clemson’s playoff résumé and provide the ACC with a signature road win against one of the SEC’s premier brands.
A loss in early September would not eliminate Clemson from playoff contention. However, a victory in Baton Rouge could provide valuable flexibility later in the season and strengthen the postseason position of both Clemson and the ACC. If the conference wants to make an early national statement, this may be its biggest opportunity.
2. Florida State at Alabama — Sept. 19
All-Time Series: Alabama leads, 3–1–1
Few games on the 2026 schedule carry more brand power than Florida State against Alabama. The Seminoles travel to Tuscaloosa for a matchup between two programs that have combined for generations of championship football, legendary coaches and some of the most recognizable players in the history of the sport.
Alabama leads the all-time series 3–1–1, meaning Florida State will be searching for only its second victory over the Crimson Tide. For Florida State, this game may reveal whether the Seminoles have the depth necessary to compete with the nation’s strongest programs. Talent at the top of the roster is important, but road games against programs such as Alabama are often decided by depth along the offensive and defensive lines.
The Seminoles cannot afford to become one-dimensional offensively. Establishing the running game would help slow Alabama’s pass rush and prevent Florida State from consistently facing long third-down situations. Sustaining drives will also be important because giving Alabama additional possessions in front of its home crowd can quickly create separation.
Defensively, Florida State must limit explosive plays and force Alabama to earn points through long drives. The Seminoles will also need to capitalize on turnover opportunities. Winning the turnover battle may be essential if Florida State hopes to leave Bryant-Denny Stadium with a victory.
The timing adds another layer of importance. Because the matchup arrives in September, the winner could immediately move into the center of the national playoff conversation. A Florida State victory in Tuscaloosa would likely become one of the strongest non-conference wins in the country. It would also provide the ACC with something every conference wants: proof that one of its leading contenders can defeat an elite SEC program on the road.
3. Tennessee at Georgia Tech — Sept. 12
All-Time Series: Tennessee leads, 25–17–2
Atlanta should be rocking when Tennessee visits Georgia Tech. The Volunteers lead the all-time series 25–17–2, but this matchup also renews a historic Southern series between two programs that once shared conference ties. The history gives the game additional meaning beyond a traditional ACC-versus-SEC matchup.
Georgia Tech has steadily worked to rebuild its identity and establish itself as a rising program in the ACC. Hosting a nationally recognized SEC opponent gives the Yellow Jackets an opportunity to demonstrate how far the program has come—and where it may be headed next.
This could become one of the most entertaining games of the early season. Tennessee will likely attempt to create tempo, stretch the field and force Georgia Tech’s defense to communicate quickly. The Yellow Jackets’ ability to prevent explosive plays and remain disciplined will be critical.
Offensively, Georgia Tech may benefit from controlling possession. Sustained drives could keep Tennessee’s offense on the sideline while allowing the Yellow Jackets to establish their running game. Georgia Tech will also need to finish drives with touchdowns rather than field goals because scoring opportunities may be difficult to replace against a talented opponent.
The atmosphere could become a major advantage. Bobby Dodd Stadium sits in the center of Atlanta and can provide one of college football’s most unique settings when the Yellow Jackets are competing in a nationally relevant game.
The recruiting implications should not be overlooked. Georgia Tech and Tennessee recruit many of the same players throughout Georgia and the Southeast. A Yellow Jackets victory would provide another example of Georgia Tech’s ability to compete with—and defeat—prominent SEC programs.
The game could also shape Georgia Tech’s entire season. The Yellow Jackets host Colorado one week earlier, giving them an opportunity to begin 2026 with two nationally relevant victories. If Georgia Tech wins both, the national conversation surrounding the program could change quickly.
4. Clemson vs. South Carolina — Nov. 28
The Palmetto Bowl
All-Time Series: Clemson leads, 74–44–4
Some games are about rankings. Others are about championships. Clemson–South Carolina is about all of that—and an entire year of bragging rights. The Palmetto Bowl remains one of college football’s most passionate rivalries. Families, workplaces and communities throughout South Carolina choose sides, and the result often determines how each fan base remembers the season.
Clemson owns a commanding 74–44–4 advantage in the all-time series. That history provides the Tigers with plenty of pride, but it also gives South Carolina additional motivation each season.
The late-November placement creates several possible layers of importance. Clemson could enter the game competing for an ACC Championship Game appearance, a College Football Playoff berth or improved postseason seeding. South Carolina may have similar postseason goals.
That creates an interesting challenge for Clemson. The Tigers cannot become distracted by a potential conference championship game the following week. Rivalry games often reward the team that handles emotion without allowing it to become a source of mistakes.
Turnovers, penalties and special teams could become especially important. Rivalry games are rarely played exactly as expected, and one momentum-changing play can affect the outcome.
For the ACC, defeating an SEC rival during the final weekend carries additional value because rivalry weekend often becomes an unofficial comparison between conferences. For Clemson, however, conference perception comes second. Beating South Carolina is personal.
5. Florida at Florida State — Nov. 28
The Sunshine Showdown
All-Time Series: Florida leads, 39–29–2
Florida and Florida State rarely need additional motivation. The Seminoles welcome the Gators to Tallahassee for another chapter in one of college football’s most recognizable rivalries. Recruiting battles, family rivalries and decades of memorable moments have made this matchup one of the sport’s annual traditions.
Florida leads the all-time series 39–29–2, giving the Seminoles an opportunity to reduce the historical gap while protecting their home field.
The recruiting implications may be as important as the final score. Florida and Florida State compete for many of the same prospects throughout the state, and rivalry victories can influence recruiting conversations long after the season ends.
On the field, Florida State’s ability to manage the emotional intensity will be important. Rivalry games can encourage aggressive play, but unnecessary penalties and mistakes can quickly erase advantages. The Seminoles must remain disciplined while matching Florida’s physicality.
The game may also test Florida State’s depth. By late November, injuries become a factor for every program. Teams capable of maintaining strong offensive and defensive line play often have an advantage during rivalry weekend.
If Florida State enters the game competing for an ACC championship or playoff position, the pressure will increase. A victory could strengthen the Seminoles’ résumé immediately before the conference championship game. A loss could create uncertainty at the worst possible time. No matter the rankings or records, Florida–Florida State always matters.
6. Louisville at Kentucky — Nov. 28
The Governor’s Cup
All-Time Series: Kentucky leads, 19–17
Few rivalry series on this list are as historically competitive as the Governor’s Cup. Kentucky holds a narrow 19–17 advantage, meaning a Louisville victory in Lexington would move the Cardinals within one game of tying the all-time series.
Louisville and Kentucky compete for control of the Commonwealth, recruiting momentum and a full year of bragging rights. The rivalry also crosses conference lines, with the Cardinals representing the ACC and the Wildcats carrying the SEC banner.
Louisville’s challenge will be matching Kentucky’s physical style, particularly at the line of scrimmage. The Cardinals cannot allow the Wildcats to control possession, shorten the game and dictate the pace. Creating early offensive success could force Kentucky away from its preferred approach.
For Louisville, efficiency may be more important than total yardage. Converting third downs, protecting the football and scoring touchdowns in the red zone could determine whether the Cardinals leave Lexington with the Governor’s Cup.
The rivalry also carries significant recruiting value. Louisville and Kentucky compete for players throughout the Commonwealth and surrounding states. Winning on the road would strengthen Louisville’s position in those recruiting conversations while providing additional momentum entering the postseason.
If Louisville enters rivalry weekend competing for an ACC Championship Game appearance or playoff consideration, the Cardinals may need a victory to protect their resume.
For the ACC, this is another opportunity to earn an important victory over the SEC. For Louisville supporters, the goal is much simpler: Bring the Governor’s Cup back to Louisville.
7. Georgia Tech at Georgia — Nov. 28
Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate
All-Time Series: Georgia leads, 73–41–1
The name says everything. Georgia Tech travels to Athens for another edition of Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate, one of the South’s oldest and most historic rivalries.
Georgia leads the all-time series 73–41–1, but records and rankings rarely capture the full importance of this matchup. The rivalry represents generations of competition between two proud programs separated by approximately 70 miles.
The Yellow Jackets will face one of the most difficult challenges on the ACC’s non-conference schedule. Georgia has established itself as one of college football’s premier programs and built the depth required to compete at a championship level every season.
For Georgia Tech, success may depend on controlling the pace and avoiding situations in which Georgia’s depth becomes overwhelming. Sustaining drives, limiting turnovers and preventing explosive plays will be essential.
The Yellow Jackets may also need creativity. Rivalry upsets often require aggressive decisions, unexpected formations or successful special-teams plays. Georgia Tech cannot play recklessly, but it may need to create additional opportunities against an opponent with significant talent throughout its roster.
The longer the game remains close, the more pressure could shift toward Georgia. The Bulldogs will enter as the team expected to win, while Georgia Tech can play with the confidence of a program attempting to change the direction of the rivalry.
An upset in Athens would immediately become one of the biggest victories in recent Georgia Tech history. It would strengthen recruiting momentum, energize the fan base and provide the ACC with a major victory during rivalry weekend.
For Georgia Tech fans, beating Georgia is never simply another win. It means something more.
8. Louisville vs. Ole Miss — Sept. 6
Nissan Stadium | Nashville, Tennessee
All-Time Series: Ole Miss leads, 1–0
Louisville will receive an early national spotlight when it faces Ole Miss at Nissan Stadium in Nashville. The programs have met only once, with Ole Miss winning the first matchup. That limited history makes the 2026 meeting an opportunity for Louisville to even the series while earning a high-profile victory against the SEC.
The neutral-site setting should attract fans from both programs and create the atmosphere of a postseason game during the opening weekend. This matchup has the potential to become one of the most entertaining games on the schedule. Both programs have demonstrated the ability to play fast, create explosive plays and put pressure on opposing defenses.
Louisville’s defense may face an immediate test in space. Preventing explosive plays will be important, but the Cardinals must avoid becoming overly conservative. Allowing Ole Miss to consistently gain manageable yardage could create long drives and wear down the defense.
Offensively, Louisville must remain balanced. Establishing the running game could slow the pass rush and create opportunities downfield. Finishing drives will be critical because settling for field goals may not be enough in a game with significant scoring potential.
A Louisville victory would immediately strengthen the Cardinals’ national credibility and give the ACC a valuable opening-week result against the SEC. Do not be surprised if this becomes one of the most entertaining games of the opening weekend.
9. North Carolina vs. TCU — Sept. 5

All-Time Series: North Carolina leads, 3–1
College football is going international again, and North Carolina will help carry the ACC brand across the Atlantic. The Tar Heels face TCU at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, providing an intriguing ACC-versus-Big 12 matchup in one of the season’s most unique settings.
North Carolina leads the all-time series 3–1 and will attempt to maintain that advantage while representing the ACC on an international stage. International games create challenges that extend beyond football. Travel schedules, time-zone changes and unfamiliar routines can affect preparation. The team that adjusts more quickly may gain an early advantage.
North Carolina must avoid allowing the excitement surrounding the international experience to become a distraction. Once the game begins, execution must become the priority. The matchup could also provide an early indication of North Carolina’s identity. Can the Tar Heels establish consistency on both sides of the football? Can the defense create stops when needed? Can the offense protect the football and finish drives?
Because this is an ACC-versus-Big 12 matchup, the result will become part of the early conversation surrounding conference strength. A North Carolina victory would provide the ACC with a quality win while giving the Tar Heels momentum before entering conference play.
The international stage creates additional visibility for the program and the conference. Winning would make the trip even more memorable.
10. Colorado at Georgia Tech — Sept. 5
All-Time Series: Georgia Tech leads, 1–0
Georgia Tech will not have much time to ease into the 2026 season. Colorado visits Atlanta in an intriguing ACC-versus-Big 12 matchup between two recognizable programs looking to build momentum.
Georgia Tech leads the all-time series 1–0, but the programs’ limited history carries major significance. Their only previous meeting came August 29, 2025, when Georgia Tech earned a victory in Boulder. However their history dates back to the 1990 college football season that ended in one of the sport’s most famous split national championships. Colorado was crowned the undisputed No. 1 team by the Associated Press (AP) Poll, while Georgia Tech finished No. 1 in the UPI Coaches Poll, creating a lingering debate over who was the true champion.
That history gives the 2026 matchup an additional storyline. More than three decades after their memorable split titles, Colorado and Georgia Tech will meet for a second time in Atlanta.
For the Yellow Jackets, the game begins one of the ACC’s most ambitious non-conference schedules. Georgia Tech hosts Colorado before welcoming Tennessee one week later and eventually traveling to Georgia during rivalry weekend.
That makes the opener especially important. A victory would provide confidence and momentum before Tennessee arrives. A loss could increase the pressure entering an even more difficult matchup.
Georgia Tech’s ability to establish its running game could become an important factor. Controlling possession would help limit Colorado’s opportunities while allowing the Yellow Jackets to dictate the pace.
Defensively, Georgia Tech must prevent explosive plays. Opening-week games can include missed assignments and communication mistakes, and Colorado will attempt to capitalize on those opportunities.
The matchup also carries recruiting and national visibility. Atlanta is one of the country’s most important recruiting markets, and a nationally relevant opening-week game provides Georgia Tech with an opportunity to showcase its program, campus and game-day environment.
A victory over Colorado would generate excitement throughout Atlanta and give the ACC an important early result against the Big 12. Georgia Tech will have several opportunities to change perceptions in 2026. This is the first one.
The strength of the ACC’s 2026 non-conference schedule is not based on one marquee game. Clemson travels to LSU. Florida State visits Alabama. Georgia Tech faces Colorado, Tennessee and Georgia. Louisville challenges Ole Miss and Kentucky. North Carolina opens its season against TCU on an international stage.
The ACC does not need to win every major non-conference game in 2026. It needs to win enough of the right ones to establish credibility, create momentum and prove that the conference remains capable of competing with the best programs in college football.
The opportunities are on the schedule. The history is already there. Now the ACC has to write its next chapter.
