Auburn’s Recruiting Surge Under Alex Golesh Has Tigers Back Among College Football’s Elite!

By Luke Fletcher | Atlanta, Georgia

When Auburn hired Alex Golesh, there were plenty of questions surrounding the future of the program. Could the former South Florida head coach recruit at an elite SEC level? Could he compete against the likes of Georgia, Alabama, Texas and LSU on the trail? And perhaps most importantly, could he quickly restore excitement around a program that has spent the last several seasons searching for consistency?

Less than a year into his tenure, Golesh is providing some early answers. According to ESPN’s latest 2027 recruiting rankings, Auburn now sits at No. 7 nationally after climbing three spots from its previous No. 10 ranking. The Tigers currently boast 10 ESPN 300 commitments and one of the most balanced classes in the country, signaling that Auburn may be laying the foundation for a return to SEC relevance sooner than expected.

The latest boost came from the commitment of four-star edge rusher Rion Jackson, whose decision helped push Auburn into the national top 10 and further strengthened a class that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

One thing is clear when looking at Auburn’s recruiting haul: Golesh believes championships are won up front. The Tigers have invested heavily in the trenches, highlighted by offensive tackle Layton Von Brandt and four-star lineman Reed Ramsier. Both prospects possess the size, physicality and competitive edge that SEC programs covet.

Von Brandt projects as a future cornerstone tackle thanks to his length and pass-protection ability, while Ramsier brings toughness and versatility after years of competing against elite competition on the camp circuit. It’s a recruiting philosophy that should sound familiar to Auburn fans. Before flashy offenses and explosive skill players can thrive, the offensive and defensive lines have to control the game.

Golesh appears determined to build his roster with that mindset. While Auburn has prioritized the trenches, the Tigers have also landed several difference-makers at the skill positions.

The headliner is four-star running back Myson Johnson-Cook, ESPN’s highest-rated offensive commitment in the class. Johnson-Cook’s combination of speed, versatility and explosiveness makes him one of the most intriguing offensive prospects Auburn has landed in recent years.

The Tigers didn’t stop there. Four-star running back Kingston Miles gives Auburn another dynamic weapon in the backfield. Miles is widely regarded as one of the more complete backs in the class, possessing the power to run between the tackles and the burst to create explosive plays in the open field.

Together, Johnson-Cook and Miles could eventually form one of the SEC’s most talented running back tandems. Auburn also added future quarterback Gary Chatmon Jr., who gives the Tigers another developmental piece at the game’s most important position.

Hybrid tight end and receiver George Lamons Jr. brings versatility and strong ball skills to the offense, while wide receiver Brylan Oduor adds size and speed on the perimeter. Oduor’s 4.51-second 40-yard dash speed gives Auburn another potential home-run threat down the road.

The Tigers’ success isn’t limited to offense. Defensively, Auburn has assembled a group that could become one of the strongest foundations in the SEC.

Four-star linebacker Isaac McNeil headlines the front seven. Ranked No. 94 nationally by On3, McNeil is one of the most highly regarded linebackers in the country and possesses the athleticism to make an immediate impact once he arrives on campus.

In the secondary, Auburn scored one of its biggest recruiting victories of the cycle when four-star defensive back Chance Gilbert chose the Tigers over Georgia. Gilbert, ranked No. 60 nationally by On3, has become one of the fastest-rising defensive backs in the country. His elite speed has been clocked at nearly 22 miles per hour during game action, giving Auburn a true difference-maker on the back end of its defense.

Combined with Jackson’s pass-rushing ability, Auburn is building a defense designed to compete against the high-powered offenses that dominate today’s SEC.

Recruiting rankings in June don’t win championships, but they often provide a glimpse into where a program is headed. For Auburn, the trajectory is becoming increasingly encouraging.

Golesh has quieted many of the concerns that followed his arrival by proving he can recruit elite talent, win battles against major SEC rivals and assemble a roster with balance across multiple position groups.

Perhaps most impressive is that Auburn’s class isn’t built around one or two headline names. The Tigers are stacking talent throughout the roster, from the offensive line and running back room to the front seven and secondary.

That’s the type of foundation successful programs are built on. There is still plenty of work to be done before Auburn can challenge for SEC championships, but the Tigers appear to have found a coach capable of attracting the caliber of talent necessary to get them there.

And judging by the current recruiting rankings, Alex Golesh’s vision for Auburn is gaining momentum faster than many expected. War Eagle!
