The Key Effect: Georgia Tech’s Recruiting Surge Puts ACC on Notice!

By Luke Fletcher | Atlanta, Georgia

For years, Georgia Tech fans have talked about what could happen if the Yellow Jackets consistently started winning recruiting battles for top talent in Georgia and throughout the Southeast. That vision is beginning to take shape.

Over the past several weeks, Brent Key and his staff have put together one of the hottest recruiting stretches in the country, transforming Georgia Tech’s 2027 class from a promising group into one that is now drawing national attention. The latest proof came this week when ESPN unveiled its updated 2027 recruiting rankings and placed the Yellow Jackets at No. 20 nationally; a significant jump into the Top 25 and one of the biggest risers in the country. 247 ranks Georgia Tech 22 nationally while ON3 has the Yellow Jackets at 24th. Georgia Tech has 25 total commitments of which seven are ESPN300 rated recruits and two are ON3 4-star prospects.

For a program that has spent years trying to close the talent gap with the ACC’s elite, the ranking feels less like a surprise and more like the result of steady momentum that has been building throughout the spring and summer.

The latest wave started in Florida, when four-star defensive back Larry Moon III announced his commitment to Georgia Tech over an impressive list of Power Four programs. The IMG Academy standout is regarded as one of the top defensive backs in the country and instantly became one of the crown jewels of the class. Landing a player from IMG Academy, a program that regularly produces some of the nation’s best prospects, sent a message that Georgia Tech is recruiting at a different level than it was just a few years ago.

The momentum didn’t stop there as Four-star edge rusher Justin Weeks, announced his commitment to the Yellow Jackets over Clemson and North Carolina. The 6-foot-6, 245-pound pass rusher gives Georgia Tech another blue-chip prospect at one of the most important positions in modern college football.

Then the Yellow Jackets landed another major victory when Week’s teammate at Douglas County High School, four-star offensive tackle Joshua Sam-Epelle committed to Georgia Tech over Georgia and Tennessee. At 6-foot-8 and 325 pounds, Sam-Epelle possesses the size and athletic traits that offensive line coaches dream about. His commitment represented another example of Key’s staff successfully keeping elite in-state talent away from SEC powers.

Suddenly, what looked like a strong recruiting class now looks like one capable of changing the trajectory of the program. The foundation of the class was already impressive.

Four-star running back Quinterrius Gipson remains one of the top offensive playmakers committed anywhere in the ACC. Defensive tackle Jamar Thompson, one of Florida’s top defensive linemen, headlines a defensive front loaded with size and athleticism. Prospects such as Success Nwabude, Maleek Lee, Kalib Spivey, Braden Gordon, and M.J. Burnett continue to give Georgia Tech one of its deepest collections of defensive talent in recent memory.

What stands out most isn’t simply the rankings or star ratings. It’s the type of players Georgia Tech is attracting. When ESPN evaluated the Yellow Jackets’ class, the network pointed to Brent Key’s emphasis on building from the trenches outward. That’s exactly what this class reflects. The commitments aren’t just talented—they fit a clear identity. Georgia Tech is recruiting bigger, longer, and more physical athletes on both sides of the ball. That identity starts up front.

Sam-Epelle joins a growing offensive line group that includes Jordan Dillon and several other large in-state prospects. On defense, Weeks, Thompson, Nwabude, and Lee give Georgia Tech a collection of linemen and edge defenders that could eventually rival some of the best position groups in the conference.

Perhaps most encouraging for Yellow Jacket fans is where many of these recruits are coming from. Georgia Tech is winning battles in its own backyard while also extending its reach into talent-rich states like Florida and Alabama. Landing prospects from Douglas County, IMG Academy, and across the Southeast suggests the program’s recruiting footprint is expanding at the same time its on-field credibility is growing.

The result is a recruiting class that now features six ESPN SC Next 300 commitments and sits among the nation’s Top 20. More importantly, there is a growing belief that this may only be the beginning.

With nearly 18 months remaining until National Signing Day, Georgia Tech has positioned itself as one of the ACC’s fastest-rising recruiting programs. Every commitment seems to be creating momentum for the next one, and every recruiting victory is generating more national attention.

For the first time in a long time, Georgia Tech isn’t simply trying to keep pace in the recruiting race. The Yellow Jackets are starting to become one of the programs setting the pace. Go Jackets!
