The Wyoming Cowboys are seeking to get to .500 on Saturday.

Fort. Collins – The Spartans look for their fourth straight win over Wyoming and their seventh win over the Cowboys in their last eight games.

Wyoming suffered a 31-17 defeat to UNLV last Saturday, with quarterback Kaden Anderson throwing for 254 yards, including one touchdown and one interception. The season started off well for Wyoming, with victories over Akron and Northern Iowa, but they have since lost three consecutive games. To keep their bowl game hopes alive, they need a win against San Jose State this week. The Cowboys’ offense is struggling, averaging only 16.8 points per game, one of the lowest in the FBS. On the defensive side, they are performing better, allowing 21.2 points per game, ranking 51st overall. Despite the loss to UNLV, Wyoming’s defense held them to just 255 yards. The Cowboys have recorded 11 sacks this season, averaging just over two per game. Last week, Anderson attempted 46 passes, the highest number since 2013, which is not ideal for a team that prefers to run the ball and control the game clock.

After five games, the Spartans are leading the Mountain West with an impressive average of 304.2 passing yards per game, ranking them 17th nationally. While their offense outperforms Wyoming’s, scoring about 23.2 points per game, their defense shows some weaknesses, allowing roughly 28 points per game. I believe Wyoming’s strong defense and home-field advantage could play a significant role in their chances this weekend. To secure a win against San Jose State, Wyoming must focus on winning the turnover battle, improving their efficiency on third downs, minimizing penalties, and enhancing their performance in the red zone on both offense and defense. Additionally, it would be great to see the Cowboys establish a reliable running game with Sam Scott, especially considering his consistent performance.

A win for Wyoming could significantly boost their chances of reaching a bowl game, while a loss would put pressure on head coach Jay Sawvel. It seems like Jay is coaching for his future, and to secure a victory, he’ll need to ensure the team plays a disciplined game, establishes a strong run game, improves their third-down conversions, and effectively contains San Jose State’s passing game, especially quarterback Danny Scudero.
