ATLANTA – This Saturday, the Hokies and Yellow Jackets will face off for the 21st time in their history, a rivalry that began in 1990, marking the 35th anniversary of their first game. Virginia Tech currently holds the edge in the all-time series with a record of 12–8. Notably, from 2005 to 2012, one of these teams represented the ACC Coastal Division in every ACC Championship Game, with Virginia Tech appearing in five and Georgia Tech in three.
The Yellow Jackets have struggled after bye weeks, losing four of their last six games following a break, including defeats against Boston College, Temple, and twice to Virginia in 2021 and 2022. Will this year be different?
Virginia Tech is set to face Georgia Tech as a double-digit underdog, which isn’t surprising given that the Yellow Jackets are strong contenders in the ACC this season and have the home-field advantage. They’re also motivated by last season’s loss to Virginia Tech, where they fell 21-6 in Blacksburg. Compounding Virginia Tech’s challenges are injuries and uncertainty surrounding their roster, especially with the transfer portal still open following Brent Pry’s recent firing. Currently, Georgia Tech boasts an undefeated record of 5-0 (2-0 in the ACC) and is ranked No. 13 nationally, while Virginia Tech is struggling at 2-4 (1-1 in the ACC) after a close defeat to Wake Forest.
Georgia Tech’s offense, spearheaded by dual-threat quarterback Haynes King, has been a dynamic force this season, consistently racking up impressive numbers. However, the team’s defensive struggles, particularly in run defense, have been a significant concern, ranking around 105 nationally and allowing approximately 166.2 rushing yards per game. This vulnerability presents an opportunity for Virginia Tech, which boasts a strong running game. Dual-threat QB Kyron Drones could exploit this weakness early in the game, while running back Marcelus Hawkins, along with the team’s “Bully Ball” approach, could further capitalize on Georgia Tech’s defensive lapses.
The bright side for Yellow Jacket supporters is that Virginia Tech has faced numerous offensive and defensive hurdles early in 2025, struggling with turnovers, penalties, and overall inconsistency. Their pass defense has been particularly vulnerable, allowing opponents to complete passes at alarming rates. This Saturday, we can anticipate a standout passing performance from the Georgia Tech offense on their home turf. To secure a victory, the Yellow Jackets will need to limit interceptions, but they are likely to pull away in the later stages of the game.
Final Predication: Georgia Tech over the Hokies 31 – 24!
