Fort. Collins – The Wyoming Cowboys are set to take on the Colorado State Rams this Saturday at 7:30 pm eastern at War Memorial Stadium for the 117th Border War matchup. The rivalry stands at a balanced 13-13 during their time in the Mountain West Conference, making this meeting particularly significant as it will be the last one between the two teams in the conference. Historically, CSU leads the all-time series with a record of 60-51-5, but the Cowboys have the edge in their 78 consecutive annual meetings since 1946, holding a 46-33-0 advantage. Since the introduction of the Bronze Boot trophy in 1968, Wyoming has also led with a 31-26 record. Looking ahead, the Pokes will kick off the 2026 season against CSU as a non-conference opponent.
With a combined record of 5-9, there are surprisingly many storylines to watch as both teams gear up for their most significant game of the year. On Monday, Wyoming’s head coach Jay Sawvel made headlines by demoting offensive coordinator Jay Johnson and promoting wide receivers coach Jovon Bouknight to take over the offense. This season, Wyoming has struggled, ranking 84th in the nation for yards per play and tied for 116th in scoring, averaging just 20 points per game. Their passing efficiency is also lacking, sitting at 109th with only nine touchdown passes in seven games. Meanwhile, Colorado State will be under the leadership of Tyson Summers, who steps in as interim coach following the dismissal of Jay Norvell. Summers, who also serves as the defensive coordinator, previously had a challenging stint as head coach at Georgia Southern, finishing with a 5-13 record. Both teams enter this matchup with 1-2 records in conference play, making this game crucial for their seasons.
The Wyoming Cowboys currently hold a record of 3-4 (1-2) after their recent 24-21 loss to Air Force. They started strong, leading 7-6 at halftime and extending their advantage to 14-6 in the third quarter, but ultimately surrendered 18 unanswered points. Despite outgaining Air Force 409-363 and converting 6 of 12 on third downs, Wyoming struggled with turnovers, finishing the game with a 2-0 deficit in that area. Kaden Anderson completed 23 of 29 passes for 211 yards, contributing one touchdown and one interception, while Terron Kellman had a solid performance on the ground with nine carries for 83 yards and two touchdowns. Jaylen Sargent was the standout receiver, catching five passes for 65 yards. On defense, Wyoming managed one sack and four tackles for loss in the game.
The Colorado State Rams currently hold a record of 2-5 (1-2) after their recent 31-19 defeat to Hawaii. They were down 14-7 at halftime but managed to narrow the gap to 24-19 in the fourth quarter before ultimately falling short. The Rams struggled offensively, gaining only 261 yards compared to Hawaii’s 435, and converting just 6 of 15 third downs. Quarterback Jackson Brousseau completed 15 of 29 passes for 176 yards and a touchdown, while running back Lloyd Avant contributed with 50 yards on eight carries. Tay Lanier was the standout receiver, catching two passes for 56 yards. Defensively, the Rams had a tough outing, recording no sacks and just one tackle for loss.
Wyoming has given up 28 or more points in four of their last five games, while Colorado State has allowed over 31 points in two of their last three outings. The Rams have made a quarterback change this season, but their offensive performance has been subpar. Although Wyoming often struggles on the road, they typically shine at home, which could be an advantage against the CSU defense. While neither defense inspires much confidence, Wyoming’s offense seems to have more potential. For Jay Sawvel to lead the team to six wins and a bowl game, securing a victory in the Border War is crucial, along with a bit of luck in the final stretch. A loss to a struggling CSU team could jeopardize his position.
