The Auburn Tigers are set to kick off the college football season this Friday in Waco, Texas, facing off against the Baylor Bears. This Week 1 clash is significant, as it promises to reveal a lot about both teams. With the excitement of NCAA Friday Night Lights in the Lone Star State, this non-conference showdown is highly anticipated. Auburn is looking to regain its footing in the SEC, bolstered by Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold, while Baylor aims to make a strong case for the Big 12 in the College Football Playoff.

Auburn wrapped up its 2024 season with a disappointing 5-7 record, including a 2-6 mark in SEC play, largely due to issues at quarterback and inconsistent performances on both offense and defense. The offseason has brought significant changes, particularly with the addition of quarterback Jackson Arnold, a highly regarded former recruit from Oklahoma, who is expected to bring stability to the Tiger offense. In the backfield, Damari Alston is anticipated to take on a major role, while new receivers Eric Singleton and Horatio Field aim to enhance a passing game that desperately needs more firepower. Malcolm Simmons, who had solid receiving numbers last year, remains a dependable target. 

On the defensive side, Auburn excelled last season, allowing only 21.3 points per game, ranking 28th nationally, and they were ninth in rushing yards allowed. The entire secondary is back, bolstered by the addition of Raion Strader, the top cornerback from the MAC, while Keldric Faulk stands out as a premier pass rusher, leading the team in sacks and finishing second in tackles for loss.

Keep an eye on Sawyer Robertson, the Baylor quarterback who had an impressive 28/8 touchdown-to-interception ratio last season. He’s emerging as one of the top prospects for the 2026 NFL Draft, thanks to the guidance of Offensive Coordinator Jake Spavital. After taking over a struggling offense ranked 101st in scoring, Spavital managed to elevate it into the top 20 in just one season. While redshirt sophomore Bryson Washington returns as the running back, the Bears are still on the hunt for a backup following Pendergrass’ injury. The receiving corps is looking strong with playmakers like Josh Cameron, who had 52 receptions last season and is a key punt returner, alongside newcomer Kobe Prentice, who adds depth to the lineup. 

Baylor’s defense remains a significant concern, particularly regarding their ability to apply pressure on opposing quarterbacks. With a history of being one of the worst defenses in the nation for two consecutive years, it’s hard to expect drastic improvements. The front seven has struggled against the run, which poses a serious challenge in the Big 12 and against teams like Auburn. The coaching staff is actively working to enhance the defense, focusing on strengthening the trenches and cornerback positions. This year, linebacker Keaton Thomas and secondary standout Devyn Bobby, who has joined through the transfer portal, will lead a defense that hopes to turn things around and become a more formidable unit.

I believe Auburn will secure a victory on the road, finishing 28-24. This matchup is set to be a tightly contested opener, but I anticipate Baylor’s struggling defense will falter as the game progresses, and the home field advantage won’t play a significant role in the final result. WAR EAGLE!
