The #23 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets went to Syracuse and got whipped. Syracuse OL and DL owned the Yellow Jackets all day long. Georgia Tech who started playing games a week earlier than everyone else is also looking tired. To be fair, the Yellow Jackets never quit despite Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord throwing for 381 yards and four TDs and being whipped at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The Orange offense ran out the clock after Georgia Tech tightened the game following a recovered onsides kick. Georgia Tech missed multiple opportunities the entire game. The short answer is No, Georgia Tech did not play like the #23 team in the country should.
Going into the game, many questions surrounded the Orange defense, specifically their ability to stop the run. It was not perfect, but the Orange held off Georgia Tech for the most part. A big reason why Georgia Tech was able to defeat FSU in Ireland was due to a dominant run game. Unfortunately Syracuse controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and the Yellow Jackets could never get in a rhythm.
Even though the Georgia Tech football team’s strengths were shut down and their weaknesses were exposed, the team still rallied back to make it a three-point game when all was said and done. One could argue had it not been for a missed FG the game could have been heading to OT. This late comeback showed the team had plenty of fight and did not quit.
Ultimately, the team has to shore up its weaknesses in order to take down top programs like Miami, Notre Dame and Georgia later in the season. Does this loss sting? Absolutely! However, the season is still young. The team has an opportunity to learn from their mistakes and shore up its weaknesses in order to take down top programs like Louisville, Miami, Notre Dame and Georgia later in this season.
